Onferno Caves, Gemmano
The Grotte di Onferno in Gemmano are the heart of the Onferno Nature Reserve, a protected area renowned for its unique geological formations. These gypsum karst caves stretch for over 850 meters and are famous for hosting one of Italy's largest colonies of bats. Visitors can explore this subterranean wonder through guided tours. Above ground, the area offers hiking trails through the reserve. The nearby village of Gemmano holds historical significance, particularly related to World War II, with the Museum of the Gothic Line commemorating the intense battles fought here. While there are no major castles or aristocratic palaces directly at the caves, the surrounding Romagna region is rich with them, such as the Fortress of San Leo and the castles of Montebello and Gradara. The Republic of San Marino and the bustling Adriatic Riviera are also easily accessible for day trips, offering a blend of history, culture, and seaside relaxation.
