Montebello Nature Oasis
The Montebello Nature Oasis is a protected wildlife area in the Valmarecchia, managed by WWF Italy. The area is dominated by the imposing Rocca di Montebello, a medieval castle belonging to the Malatesta and later the Guidi di Bagno families. The castle, perfectly preserved, is a major historical monument known for the legend of Azzurrina, the ghost of a young girl said to haunt its halls. Visitors can take guided tours, including special night tours focused on the paranormal legend. While the oasis itself focuses on nature, the surrounding region is rich in history. Nearby attractions include the historic republic of San Marino, the fortress of San Leo, the Malatestian town of Verucchio, and the artistic hub of Santarcangelo di Romagna. The entire Valmarecchia valley offers a tapestry of fortresses, ancient villages, and aristocratic palaces, reflecting centuries of history under powerful families like the Malatesta. Events at the castle often include historical reenactments and themed dinners.
